Work differences by generation:
The consulting firm Concours Group makes these insightful observations:
Workers under 35 tend to:
Feel less loyal to institutions or the larger workplace than older workers but while they’re working for you consider themselves very loyal.
Want to take on responsibility right away.
Want to give input and not earn their way up.
Be unafraid to make decisions.
Workers age 35 to 54 tend to:
Be more anti-authoritarian and idealistic.
Be ambitious, flexible, and people-oriented.
Have more distrust for leadership.
Stay in their role longer because people ahead of them are retiring later.
Workers age 55 and up tend to:
Be more loyal to their organization.
Trust authority and respect rules.
Feel people should pay their dues before being given responsibility.
Value financial security.
Have higher social skills, making them ideal for customer service.

Support Group: My message on Sunday was about two things- the sin of self-sufficiency and living life with no regrets. After service a few people were telling me how they were bummed about what I talked about because now they have to change. I told them that's ok we'll form a support group and do it together. People were casually confessing that they'd need to join the group when Todd says "I'd join your self-sufficiency support group but I don't need it I can get over it on my own!"

Fifty: 50 is the number of miles I ran this month. I have one more running day left but at hitting the milestone I wanted to post. This month I ran a total of 8 hours 37 minutes and 30 seconds. So for 1 work day almost including a lunch break I was running (after thursdays run I'll have taken care of the lunch break). To save you the math that's a pace of 10 minutes and 20 seconds a mile.

The Bucket List: I have a policy that I don’t cry during tv shows or movies. My thinking is that there is enough to cry about in real life why shed tears for something I’m not personally involved in. But I’ll admit there are times that I do cry during movies, by crying you should know I mean a tear will come to my eye and while I silently blink back the tear, note single tear, I try to figure out a way to touch my eye so I can dry the lone drop before it begins its escape from my eye.
Last night Heather and I went to see The Bucket List. I knew I was going to shed that tear during the movie, I mean how can you not when you watch a movie about 2 terminally ill cancer patients that become friends? But no need to defend myself I’d rather tell you about the movie.
Rarely do I entertain the thought of losing my life and leaving my family on this earth without me. It’s not that I’m that narcissistic but that I hate the thought of… well I’m not quite sure what I hate the thought of. I believe it’s the fear of leaving my family alone, it’s the desire of always wanting to be there for them, especially when they need me.
I guess what most of us want in life is to live a nice long life, one filled with challenges we overcome. I guess most of us want to cheat death a little bit, we want to stretch it out as long as it’s going well. I also believe that the reason why terminal illnesses are so devastating, besides the death part, are that they steal life before they actually bring death. Maybe I need to dwell on that before I declare that my official stance.
Well I’ve gone on for four paragraphs now and I’m not sure what I’ve said besides some sporadic ramblings about life and death. Go watch The Bucket List. It’s a good movie and thought provoking.

Can I tell you something?: This Sunday we tried something new after church. Instead of a typical annual meeting we did an event called Bridge 360. Which as the name describes is a 360 view of the church. We looked back to 2007 and forward to 2008.
The first amazing thing of B360 is that we had nearly 100% participation. I believe there was only 1 person that couldn't make it that is a member or regular attender of The Bridge. There was an excitement in the air after an excellent worship service and them moving into B360 right after that was just perfect. As the pastor I was able to clearly share the vision I have of our church and well as the individuals in the church. I was very very honest about our current situation and where we need to be in the next few months. I asked everyone to take responsibility for their own spiritual growth while BJ, our worship leader, and I, do our very best to create a worship experience that challenges them and takes them deeper.
I told them The Bridge Church exists to equip you to have a thriving relationship with Jesus Christ. Thriving is growing, challenging and reaching.
We also talked about money and we talked about our weekly and monthly bottom line that we need to begin reaching. I gave the facts and then we prayed about our situation. I've given everyone pledge cards and asked each family pray that God would make clear to them what they are to pledge to give to God through The Bridge in 2008. We will collect these cards Sunday January 21 and I'll blog then about the amazing way God has provided.

Distance: Today I started a new running program. I'm training to run a 10k (6.25 miles) sometime this spring. I was going to train to run an 8k (5 miles) on March 15 but since my new little boy is schedule to be born on March 14 I thought that would be bad timing. Um...baby. I know you just had a baby and I know it required major surgery. But there is this race today that I really wanna run. I'll be back in a few hours. Don't worry the nurses have it all under control.
So I decided to bypass that and I'll just do a 10k race at a little later date.
So today was my first long run. A long run is a run where you never really get out of breath but your whole purpose is to train your legs and get used to be running and on your feet for long periods of time. Today I ran a new personal distance record of 5 miles and I did it at about an 11 minute mile pace. That's 55 minutes of running.
If you have no idea what that video is I'm sorry. I'm sorry your parents failed you by not letting you watch The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. That dance is called the Carlton and is a staple is any persons' dance repertoire. It's also good for a laugh.

"Oh, that you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you," says the Lord Almighty, "and I will accept no offering from your hands. My name will be great among the nations, from the rising to the setting of the sun. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to my name, because my name will be great among the nations," says the Lord Almighty.
Malachi 1:10-11
This in response to the things happening in the post-exhilic Jerusalem in the book of Ezra.

Ought Eight: So here we are in 2008. Thoughts evade me right now but I feel compelled to get something down here at Thinking Padre. I haven't had time to sit down and think through some of my goals for 2008 but before I do I want to consider something.
I wonder as I get older as I flip through calendars or consider pictures of the past and I come to pictures of 2008 what will I remember. I'll definitely remember my 2nd son being born, I'll remember that Nathan turned three this year. I won't likely remember my physical achievements, I won't remember how much money I made or that I drive an awesome 1995 Honda Accord. I might remember that the Redskins won the Super Bowl (I can dream right) but I won't remember many things about this year.
I wonder how many of my memories of 2008 will be things I planned for or things that just "happened" to me. It seems seldom do our lives go as they are planned and our happiness is dependent on how well we accept those "happenings" rather than how much we cause them.
Perhaps that's how I should consider what my goals will be for this year.
I believe I have come to my first goal of 2008.
1. To make sure I'm right in the middle of what God has planned for me. To obey him with reckless abandon and to strive to be content where he would have me. At first writing this sounds negatively passive but I believe it is the most active thing I can do sometimes.
God keep me aligned this year...please.
